Melode | مِلود
My name is Melody Safavi. I’m a singer-songwriter, best known as the lyricist and co-founder of ABJEEZ, a Persian fusion band where humor and rebellion have always gone hand in hand. Our music mixes Persian lyrics with reggae, rock, ska, and flamenco — an unlikely combination, perhaps, but one that over the years has become very much our own version of world pop.
At heart, I’ve always been drawn to telling stories, whether through music, words, or images. I’ve lived in different countries and moved between cultures for most of my life, and each place has left something behind in me. Being uprooted hasn’t always been easy, but it has shaped the way I see the world and made questions of belonging, identity, and human connection a natural part of what I create.
My solo project, MELODE (short for Melody, and what my family has called me for as long as I can remember) is a more personal side of that journey. It gives me room to explore what it means to be a woman living between different, and sometimes conflicting, worlds. Some songs begin with a memory, some with something I can’t quite let go of, and others simply with a question I’m trying to understand myself. While the songs begin with me, the music comes to life through collaboration with talented musicians who bring their own sound, ideas, and personality into the process. I write mainly in Persian, the language that feels most natural to me when I write songs. But musically, I’ve never really belonged to one place or one genre. Everything I’ve lived through, everywhere I’ve called home, and all the music I’ve loved along the way somehow finds its way into what we create together.
